Karl Lagerfeld, the king of the fashion world passed away and will be missed!

The Chanel’s Creative Director will be remembered by some as much for his barbs as his outfits, but also for his relationships with his models and most of all his quotes.

When I was four, I asked my mother for a valet for my birthday.”

The only love that I really believe in is a mother’s love for her children.”

I’m very much down to earth. Just not this earth.”

Elegance is an attitude.”

Lagerfeld’s website says his year of birth was 1938 – though most placed his age at five years older.

He died on Tuesday morning after being admitted to hospital the night before, French media reported.

As a German designer who moved to Paris at 14, he transformed the fortunes of Chanel, one of the leading names in the fashion industry, but his work also filtered down to the high street and beyond.

Lagerfeld became a designer at Fendi in 1965 and founded his own brand in 1984, but it was his success at the house of Chanel, where he became designer in 1983.

Who has paid tribute?

Many celebrities have been lining up to praise Lagerfeld’s work on Instagram and Twitter. Among them Bella Hadid, Victoria Beckham and Naomi Campbell but also Melania Trump:

He reimagined the catwalk as a theatre and transformed high fashion into blockbuster entertainment.
